Now I know I've been off the blogging radar for a good couple of weeks or so, but in my defense my internet connection has been diabolical...that and I've been a tad preoccupied...ahem.
Now I've seen a lot change in the past few weeks with the fashion industry, however the main change that caught my eye was the latest underwear collection designed and modeled by David Beckham. (Not because its David Beckham...) Instead this is down to his latest collection. Now call me what you like, but David isn't all that for me. Yes hes good looking for his age, has the body of a God etc etc. But the collection didn't really do it for me, in fact it did nothing what so ever...
Why, you ask? Well for a start I'm a woman and I'm pretty sure most women prefer knickers to briefs..(Or at least I do..) Secondly the collection itself has very little to offer as a whole.
Upon a trip to H&M with The Boy in a bid to find him a decent pair of gloves (thanks to the unexpected snow) I noticed the collection and couldn't help but think why there was little male attraction, but instead more female attraction. (And before you say, I'm pretty sure not all of them where buying for their male partners..)
Still, if you ask me I personally think if the collection didn't have his name on it, no one would care. It sounds harsh but in a competitive industry like fashion, where high street stores are closing down every 5 minutes, collections like these would not impact on the consumer if it wasn't endorsed. When looking at his line, I couldn't help but think what little it has to offer. I don't doubt most men would prefer simpler briefs, vest tops and joggers then cringe worthy prints, but if you ask me I would be able to source products exactly like these in M&S etc.
As well as this, the television ad itself involves David Beckham himself posing, but shows nothing more then his toned body and tattoo collection, again something we all see and know.
It also got me thinking about his underwear campaign for Armani that he modeled for a few years ago. This doesn't really differentiate between that and the H&M one.
A recent quote from David In Vogue magazine stated he was embarrassed of the ad when it was aired during the super bowl; "I'm very shy. It was kind of embarrassing," Well the boy has some modesty I'll give him that..
Overall, I wasn't overly impressed with the collection purely based on the lack of idea and inspiration behind it. As well as this, I hear celebrity endorsement isn't as effective as it use to be. Unless you're a designer collaborating with Topshop...more on that later guys.
